In rendering a curved surface, and artist must decide where to place the highlight- an erasure, or a dot of white paint. With this simple flourish, we are suddenly struck by the reality of the object. Something ordinary, hiding in the shadows of a drawing, becomes illuminated. That artistic decision is one that can also be arrived at mathematically. In geometry, a brilliant point is that specific ray of light upon a surface that shines towards the point of sight. In this work on paper, the geometric illustration of that practical equation is made into an object itself.

Bio
Gabrielle Teschner (b. Newport News, VA, 1981) is an artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. She received her BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2003 and her MFA in Sculpture from California College of the Arts in San Francisco. She has exhibited work concerning the language of maps throughout the Bay Area and continues to study documents as cultural mechanisms in the current body of work.
