Langton's downstairs space is a standard black box theater easily transformed into an installation space, a screening room, a concert hall, or a quiet place for a reading. Since 1975, the theater has been used as a space for artists and audiences to connect, debate, witness, and experience contemporary art.
The events that take place downstairs are tied to the emergence of new art forms – performance and time-based art, video, installation, improvised and electronic music, and language poetry. Langton also presents lectures and panels that bring artists and other professionals together to further discuss and debate topics surrounding exhibitions and events. The curators, artists themselves, actively seek out innovative and challenging artists from around the world, bringing emerging and established artists to San Francisco and presenting the best of the Bay Area to national audiences. Projects range from performances by experimental musicians Eddie the Rat (2005); innovative literary readings by such artists as Caroline Bergvall, Robert Glück, and Michelle Tea as part of the Performance Writing series (2004-2006); premiere of a video game by digital artist Greg Niemeyer (2005); and a night of tribute honoring Tony Labat with live performance and video by Nao Bustamante, Felipe Dulzaides, Matmos, and Linda Montano among others (2005).
Langton has hosted some of the earliest presentations of accomplished artists who are now leaders in their fields. Events have included performances by Karen Finley (1982), Paul McCarthy (1983), Nao Bustamante (1991, 02); readings by Leslie Scalapino (1977, 84, 88), Kathy Acker (1980, 92), Robert Glück (1980, 2006), Eileen Myles (1990, 2005), Charles Bernstein (1993); video and film screenings by Nam June Paik (1975), Chip Lord (1980, 00), Gary Hill (1985), Jeanne Finley (1987); concerts by Bill Fontana (1979, 82), Diamanda Galas (1982); John Zorn (1983), Idris Ackamoor (1988), Wadada Leo Smith (1989), Glenn Spearman (1993); and Pamela Z (1996), and lectures by Barbara Kruger (1977), Vito Acconci (1978), Martha Rosler (1980), and Mary Kelly (1982).
